Spring is in the air at Magnet: penises, poetry, sexual fantasies and gay identity

Greetings from Magnet! We're gearing up for a great month. We continue our series of monthly first-Friday art openings on April 6. This month, we invite you to celebrate Cobra Teal’s erotic nature based carvings and tapestries. We are excited to showcase his interactive work throughout April. The art opening runs this Friday the 6th from 8:00 – 10:00 pm and features appetizers and beverages.

Next Tuesday on April 10, Dharma Brandon leads “An Evening of Trouble”. Dharma will explore how to harness the rich and beautiful capacity to awaken our sexual fantasies to even more substantial fulfillment. The group starts at 6:30 pm and, like all Magnet events, is free. RSVP is requested by visiting www.InsightTransformation.com.

Finally, in addition to our regular Dance Party on the second Saturday of the month and our monthly open mic, Smack Dab, on the 18th, we continue our book club with "The Velvet Rage" on April 24 at 7:30pm. All-in-all we're excited for our transtion out of winter and look forward to celebrating it with you.

Sacred Cocks: Cobra's Erotic Nature Based Carvings & Tapestries
8:00 - 10:00pm

Join Magnet for this unique and interactive showing of Cobra Teal's erotic sculpture and tapestries. The opening is on April 6 and the work is featured throughout the month.

Artist Statement:

"The act of sex is sacred. These carvings and tapestries are an expression of the divine through sex and nature. They portray gay sexuality as timeless, from the dawn of life to the future.

"My work is inspired by several passions in my life. One of these is the radical faeries, a community that embraces unconfined love. Another is pornography – porn always gets a bad rap, but it also inspires, and when I'm carving, the size of the wood is a turn-on to me. The third influence is nature and the seasons. Where you have sex is as important as the act itself. Gay men are linked to nature, and a place can become sacred because we have sex there.

"Judy Grahn's book, Another Mother Tongue, did a lot of work that enabled our ancient traditions to make sense in this world. I want my carvings and tapestries to express that ancient faggot history, which is intertwined with nature.

"I create my tapestries on unbleached muslin cloth, with pen and ink and watercolor. Cloth is, to me, more sensual and softer than paper, and reminds me of times past. For my carvings, I only use pine from fallen branches because they are gifts from the Goddess. The wood is given, not taken.

"I want my art to reflect the erotic, spiritual, playful joy of queer sex within nature."

An Evening of Trouble
6:30 - 9:00pm

Do you have a favorite sexual fantasy that rocks your world everytime you pull it out of your mental file cabinet? (Yeaahhh ...you do!) Amazing, isn't it, what we can do with our minds? But, while that gets the job done, so to speak, do you really understand why you choose that fantasy...over and over again? In this evening we will explore how we can harness this rich and beautiful capacity to not only provide ejaculatory release, but awaken us to even more substantial fulfillment. In a safe and gently playful environment you will learn how to increase and direct your sexual pleasure, as well as inquire into the deeper longing that is driving your sexual journey. (This will all take place without nudity or induced genital contact.) Most importantly, you will be supported in opening to your basic nature as immaculate peace, stillness and love.

This evening is an initiation into the deeper dimensions of our integrity and erotic spirituality, and is ideally suited for those already on a spiritual path, or anyone serious about being truly happy and fulfilled sexually.

This evening is happily offered free of charge to the community, but a brief RSVP is requested by clicking the link above. We look forward to meeting you... in the flesh.

Smack Dab Open Mic feat. Brent Calderwood
8:00 - 9:30pm

Our monthly open mic night, Smack Dab, is all ages, all genders, all the time. Hosted by Larry-Bob Roberts and Kirk Read. This month featuring Brent Calderwood.

Brent Calderwood's poetry has appeared in the American Poetry Journal, The Gay & Lesbian Review Worldwide, and the anthology "Divining Divas." He is a current Pushcart Prize nominee and 2011 winner of the Atlanta Queer Lit Festival Broadside Contest, judged by Mark Doty. His essays have appeared in the Chicago Sun-Times, OUT Magazine, and a forthcoming anthology on Joni Mitchell. He is the Literary Editor for A&U Magazine and Associate Editor for Lambda Literary and the poetry journal Assaracus. His music was featured in the 2009 film The Butch Factor, making him one of the few gay poets on IMDB. His website is www.brentcalderwood.com.

If you'd like to perform at the open mic, please come beginning at 7:30pm and bring five minutes of whatever you want to share. Musicians: one song. Prose writers: that's about two and a half double spaced pages of prose. We’re the friendliest open mic you’ll find but we pay attention to time so that nobody accumulates further open mic-related PTSD.

Presented by Army of Lovers, a project of the Queer Cultural Center with support from the San Francisco Arts Commission, Zellerbach Family Foundation, the San Francisco AIDS Foundation, Horizons Foundation, TheatreBayArea and the California Arts Council
